Digestive diseases continue to rise in America and are one of the most prevalent causes of disability in the workforce. I’ve been where you are.
I suffered for years with multiple health challenges, some of which I dismissed as a “normal” part of life, such as having occasional acid reflux in my late teens. Later, I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and decided to follow the recommendation from doctors to take medication.
After many years of dealing with difficult side effects, I developed severe abdominal and pelvic pain and was given a diagnosis of IBS. I was offered more medications and I was just not getting better. As time went on, I experienced chronic pain, nausea, food intolerances, skin rashes and other uncomfortable and debilitating symptoms. I felt frustrated, angry, isolated, hopeless, and began to experience anxiety. I was not finding any relief from conventional medicine.
I began to question everything about my health. This led me to explore different paths to healing and to focus on nutrition and lifestyle changes. I researched and sought out alternative healing therapies such as acupuncture, meditation, traditional Chinese medicine, ayurvedic medicine, hypnotherapy, chiropractic and osteopathic medicine.
After years of symptoms, I started to see improvements. The more committed I was to making significant, but incremental changes, the more I healed. The rashes went away, the abdominal pain subsided, food intolerances diminished, and I had no symptoms of multiple sclerosis. Through this experience I discovered how your overall health is often linked back to your gut health and this ignited my passion for all things gut related.
Throughout my healing journey, I learned how to use food as medicine and realized how individuals can have very different responses to the same foods. Sometimes even painful reactions to “healthy” foods. I also realized that while nutrition is an important part of the healing process, there is so much more to consider.
Healing takes time, requires support, is intuitive, and creative. There are ups and downs that require work, patience, and lots of love. I personally experienced the most profound healing beginning with nourishing my body with the proper foods, developing a healing mindset, practicing self-compassion and focusing on self-care.
